Host a Foreign Exchange Student for Mayer Lutheran High School

Mayer Lutheran High School is seeking a host family for Antonia, a female exchange student from Germany, for the 2012-13 school year. She plays piano and enjoys sports, such as golf, skiing, and dance. She loves to read and has an interest in architecture. She is an excellent student and has been studying English for 8 years. Mayer Lutheran High School is looking for a family to host a freshmen boy next school year. This student is Joel Wacker, whose older brother graduated from Mayer Lutheran two years ago. The Wacker's are living in Iowa but would like Joel to benefit from a Mayer Lutheran education. AWARD-WINNING CHRISTUS CHORUS TO VISIT MT OLIVE

On Sunday April 22nd 2012, an ensemble of singers from the award—winning Christus Chorus of Concordia University, St. Paul will visit Mt. Olive to worship with us, and to give us the opportunity to support them in raising funds for their concert/service tour to South Korea May 14-28. On their tour the choir will share performances with professional, community, school, university, and children’s choirs, as well as attend workshops and cultural sites. Luther University in Yongin and International Lutheran Church in Seoul are part of the choir’s itinerary.

Each student is raising $2,700 for the trip, and the congregation is invited to support them with donations and purchases of Christus Chorus CDs following the service. Checks can be made payable to “Concordia University Christus Chorus.” Thanks for supporting these young people in their music ministry here and abroad!

Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekends in 2012

The last Spring Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekend for Minnesota will be May 4-6 in Walker. Dates coming up in the Fall are October 19-21 in Brooklyn Center and November 16-18 in Duluth. Register early to guarantee your place.

A Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekend begins at 8:00 pm on Friday and ends at 5:00 pm on Sunday. It includes two nights in a comfortable hotel and five delicious meals plus engaging presentations by four Lutheran couples, including a clergy couple. Presentations are followed by exercises and questions the two of you discuss in the privacy of your hotel room. There is no counseling or required sharing.

St. Boni Community Group - You're invited‏!

There's a new community group starting in St. Boni. You are welcome to join us from 6:30 to about 8:00 PM the second and fourth Thursday of each month. The group meets for Christian friendship, Bible Study, prayer, and serving the people of St. Boni & Minnetrista. If you would like to ride with me, just let me know. Tammy Herbes, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia, has volunteered to host the group, so we will meet at her house. Her address is 8415 Park Ave., St. Boni. Directions: Please note that there are two Park Ave. streets in St. Boni. Our (Park Ave.) is off from Highland Rd. There is another Park Ave. which is off from County Rd 92. We are not the Park Ave. off from County Rd 92. Here are directions to our home. Heading North on County Rd 92, take a right unto Wildwood Ave. (Catholic cemetary) then go to 2nd stop sign which will be Highland Rd then turn left unto Highland and then take first immediate left unto Park Ave. (dead end). On top of the hill, we are the brick rambler on the right side of street with the basketball hoop in driveway.
When coming from Mound, you can turn left unto Highland Rd from 110.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF PROJECTS – 2011

For 2011 we have made 72 Quilts, 102 School Kits, 78 Layettes, and 106 Health Kits.

Thank you to all of you for your generous support through making school bags, cutting quilt squares and making and tying quilts, making baby sweaters, providing the many materials needed to complete these kits and cash donations that were received. A big thank you to all who have donated their time and talent for all of the mission projects made this year. Also for all of you who helped in the assembly of the kits and packing them.

New Guidelines for making kits in 2012

School Kits – Continue to make in 2012. Changes are that we will no longer be making school bags as the new guidelines require a sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bag approximately 14” x 17” with shoulder straps; recommended fabrics include heavy cotton, canvas, denim, and twill. The contents of the School Kit has most of the same items, adding 5 ballpoint pens, adding an additional 70-sheet notebook (4 needed/kit), and deleting the need for construction paper.

Personal Care Kits (formerly Health Kits) – Continue to make in 2012. Changes are that we will need one light or medium-weight bath-size towel (approximately 52” x 27”, dark color recommended, instead of a hand towel and a wash cloth. Two bath-size bars of soap are required. We will need one nail clipper instead of a nail file. The toothbrush and sturdy comb remain the same.

Mission Quilts – Continue to make in 2012. No changes to these guidelines.

Baby Care Kits (formerly Layettes) – Due to the new guidelines we will discontinue making these kits for 2012. The Women of Mount Olive have supplemented these kits for 2010 with more funds that our budget allowed. We estimated that the cost to make one Baby Care Kit would be approximately $35.00. We currently do not have the resources to make these kits. Sleepers with feet and onesies are no longer in the Baby Care Kit. These are replaced with cotton t-shirts, long or short-sleeved gowns or sleepers without feet, two pairs of socks, a jacket with a hood or include a baby cap, one hand town (dark colored recommended) two bath-size bars of gentle soap, two receiving blankets, two diaper pins.

Fabric Kits – Discontinued in 2011 due to cost of fabric. The new guidelines require two pieces of fabric: 2-1/4 yards 0f 60” wide fabric, or 3 yards of 44” wide fabric, or 4 yards of 36” wide fabric. Two spools of matching or neutral-colored general purpose thread (250-300 yards). Needles have been discontinued as they have sewing machines now.

NEEDED: Volunteers who enjoy visiting and playing with the elderly. Play Bingo, enjoy a tea party, read a book with someone, escort people to worship. Lake Minnetonka Shores Presbyterian Homes, Spring Park, a Christian Elderly and Child Care Campus, will be opening up their new Memory Care Unit along with a new addition which includes a new chapel, restaurant, activity center and more. Be part of the excitement as we move to a new level of care for those who need it. Give a cup of cool water and be blessed!
